Abstract

This compendium is of the usual type and comprehensiveness intended presumably for the undergraduate and the general practitioner. The range of discussion on any subject is always quite limited in a text of this kind. The author has very successfully brought out diagnostic essentials. Therapy receives rather scant attention. This is probably quite unavoidable but will prove disappointing to the large class of readers for whom such a book is intended. The subject matter deals particularly with diseases common to infancy and considerably less with those common to older children. The arrangement of the subject matter is quite different from that generally followed in textbooks. Etiological factors form the principal basis on which the division is made. On this basis there are roughly three large groupings: (1) Diseases due to congenital defects or influences; (2) diseases of the alimentary tract; (3) diseases due to infectious agencies.
