The results of studies on the salts of the blood and excreta in nephritis were reported in previous papers.1 The observations in this paper were made of the total base as found in these cases and on some further estimations on the total base in the blood by a modification of Fiske's method.
The results obtained in the study of the total base of the plasma are given in table 1. The relatively slight variation in the concentration of total base of the plasma in different types of nephritis and under varying conditions is apparent. Marked abnormality is noted in only two serums. Others, however, are at the lower limits of normal and are lower than those found by Blackfan and Hamilton2 in nine children who were nearly normal, namely, from 156 to 161 cc. tenth-normal base per hundred cubic centimeters of blood.
