Abstract

This small volume consists of a general survey of the acid-base balance and the application of this knowledge to the treatment of diseases in infants and in children. The authors have at all times kept in mind the needs of those physicians who are not deeply versed in the intricacies of chemical physiology.

The first few chapters deal with the reaction of the blood, definition of terms, carbon dioxide dissociation curve, defenses against acidosis and alkalosis and the determination of the state of the acid-base equilibrium. This general discussion of the fundamental principles involved in acid-base balance is written in simple style so that it is easily understood by any physician, and it furnishes an excellent basis for the later presentation of disturbances in acid-base balance.

Conditions discussed from the clinical point of view include: diabetes, nephritis, gastro-enteritis, cyclic vomiting, ketosis, salicylate poisoning, acidosis due to anesthesia, tetany and pyloric
