The purpose of this book is to point out to the laity, and especially to the other members of a family in which there is a mentally ill member, the present scientific conception of the illness. Mental illness is pictured as no different from any other type of illness; its hereditary factors are given proper importance, and the error of feeling disgrace and shame is emphasized. There is a discussion of mental hospitals and their place in a medical system. This book should be read by all persons who have to deal with the relatives of mentally sick people and can be recommended to the families themselves.
