This book of 609 pages presents a study of the function of the general hospital, its role in the care of all types of illness and the conduct of activities related to patient service, with recommendations for its extension and integration for more adequate care of the American public.

Prompted by the American Hospital Association and financed by several funds, a committee made up of outstanding persons from fields which have a broad interest in health and welfare activities was independently selected to carry on the study. Such a broad subject as hospital care available to the general public could not arrive at an appraisal of each individual unit, and so the study to be made was reduced to six basic objectives. Further, because of the limitations of time and finance, one state was selected for a comprehensive study. This survey became the pattern for the other states through agencies
