Abstract

This time-honored text has been not only revised but extensively rewritten. After a lapse of nine years without a revision, the necessity for a thorough reconsideration of old material and the addition of much new material was seriously undertaken by the authors, for which they should be congratulated. The chapters on medical mycology, which were never adequate in previous editions, together with the added and greatly expanded sections on pleuropneumonia organisms, viruses, sulfonamide drugs, antibiotic substances and immunology, are probably the most noteworthy and welcome changes.

It is encouraging to note the greater emphasis placed on the public health aspects of bacteriology, which is in keeping with the present tendency to expanded teaching of preventive medicine.

It is with great relief that the many new illustrations have been noted. The text contains a large amount of material that was published in the literature only a few months before the book
