We appreciate the comment by Dr Luft that our article is "well researched, well written, and important to read." As physicians, we do not possess the philosophical credentials of Dr Luft, who clearly is an expert on G. W. F. Hegel. While his observation that Hegel never stated that "ends justifies means" is correct, the sentence in our article did not propose that he did so. Rather, we felt that a Hegelian ethic permits others to reach the conclusion that "ends may be justified by means." We believe this to be so for several reasons, which we will elaborate below.
