In her letter to the editor, Dr Westley Wright Byrne voices both confusion and frustration with the role of NPs in our health care system. She correctly mentions that pediatrics and nursing share a common set of values and orientation to health care promotion. However, while there is also a significant overlap in communication and clinical skills between pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners, there remain substantial differences in training and clinical decision-making skills. As such, each profession plays an independent role, while collaboration between the two can enhance the efforts of both.
