Numerous studies have found an association between diabetes and suicidal ideation.1 However, several shortcomings of previous studies limit the generalizability of these findings. First, previous studies have been performed primarily in clinical samples2; therefore, it is not clear whether or to what extent this association is applicable to those in the general population who have not sought treatment in specialty medical treatment settings. Second, previous studies have included adults and adolescents; thus, findings may not be generalizable to children at risk.
