I was stunned and saddened to learn of the death of Walt Tunnessen due to melanoma after reading Jim Stockman's warm tribute in the May issue of the ARCHIVES. I think I am one of a legion of pediatricians who learned countless pearls from Walt over the years through his "Pediatric Puzzler" and "Picture of the Month" series. His zest and talent for teaching literally leapt off the pages.
I first met Walt when sharing a cab to an Association of Pediatric Program Directors meeting. What a thoughtful, friendly, and genuinely humble soul! My subsequent contacts with Walt were always a treat for me. Whether it was winning the meconium cup at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting (we couldn't lose with Walt nailing every dermatology question) or calling him at the American Board of Pediatrics with a particularly tricky resident problem, it was always a pleasure to work with him. He never failed to teach me something.
