As a family physician, I manage numerous patients with life-threatening diabetic complications. However, there are facets of diabetes care I have taken for granted. I have never checked my own glucose levels or injected myself with insulin. I can occasionally take liberties with my healthful lifestyle. I don’t have to comply with the complex medication regimens I sometimes prescribe. As a family medicine residency faculty member, I teach my residents to provide comprehensive care for diabetic patients, yet I myself had a few things to learn.
