This past year, JAMA Pediatrics held our first annual contest for the best article submitted by a trainee as a first author. The response was tremendous, with 90 papers received from trainees at all stages of their careers, including medical students, graduate students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows, making selecting winners extremely challenging. Papers were judged on the significance of the research question, the innovation of their work, and the rigor of their study design and analysis.
