To Jay M. Arena, The Pediatrician

Am J Dis Child. 1987;141(10):1098. doi:10.1001/archpedi.141.10.1098

Pediatrician, first of physicians in God's eye,
When he comes to rest in the sweet bye and bye.
Who instead of pursuing life's journey in search of wealth
Utilized his time, energy, and interest in pursuit of child health.
Who waged his war against diseases of body and mind
To make our posterity, our children, to be best of their kind.
When asked for life's futuristic goal or priority
Childrens welfare, education, and health put first for all to see.
Who loves and enjoys the promise of human growth to behold,
From genetic and environmental influences yet untold.
When asked to treat he thinks how to prevent
The simple and complex biological and psychobiological event.
His life is living and reliving as he observes children grow.
The promise, meaning, and purpose of life in each child he is to know.
When you behold the most youthful, happy, and fulfilled physician,
Without doubt it will surely be the pediatrician.
