I am currently a few weeks into my first ever neonatal rotation, and frankly, I had been loathing every bit of it. Nobody warned me about this when I decided to take neonatology out for a spin. It seemed as though neonatology was that elusive skeleton inside pediatrics’ closet.

Perhaps doing my first neonatal rotation at a tertiary unit made it seem worse than it actually is. The patients are understandably sicker; death comes in clusters, as the saying goes; management is aggressive; and, despite our best efforts, some extremely premature munchkins just do not make it.
