Pediatric obesity is a public health challenge of the 21st century. In the coming generation of Americans, nearly 60% of adults are expected to acquire obesity by the age of 35 years, and approximately half of those will have developed obesity in childhood. Childhood obesity increases the risk of acquiring components of the metabolic syndrome at an early age, which is associated with a decreased quality of life, comorbidities, and early mortality in young adulthood. In addition to the physical health risks, children with obesity commonly experience reduced socioemotional health and stigma.
