The article by Malloy et al1 in the August 1998 issue of the ARCHIVES that looks at preceptor expectations and student performance is interesting and useful.
However, a technical error in the recommendations in Table 4, page 809, should be corrected. Lead and erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels should not be determined on serum samples. Because almost all of both substances are carried on or in the erythrocytes, whole-blood specimens should be tested.2,3
