Pediatric residency training requires a broad-based learning experience consisting of exposure to multiple subspecialty areas in which knowledge and skills are in a constant state of flux. Amidst this overwhelming educational challenge to house officers lies the necessity of mastering the basics of general pediatrics. With the current emphasis of health care reform on primary care medicine, pediatric residency programs are being required to provide more ambulatory experiences for those in training.1,2
