One of the 6 key elements of quality health care as defined by the Institute of Medicine in Crossing the Quality Chasm1 is effectiveness of care. Health care, no matter how timely, family empowering, and efficient, cannot be high quality without first being effective. Yet, much of what pediatricians and others who care for children and adolescents do on a daily basis in the office has an unknown effect on the health of their patients.
