We read with great interest the comments of Drs van der Wouden and Bernsen on our article on the effect of pet ownership and indoor allergen exposure on lung function at age 3 years. While we agree that disentangling the contribution of various factors to the development of allergy is both important and complicated, this was not the question that we attempted to answer in our study. We made it very clear that the question we addressed was the relationship between the combination of sensitization and current exposure to high levels of sensitizing allergen and lung function in preschool children, which is distinct from that of the causal factors contributing to the development of allergy in childhood.1
