Quo Vadis Pediatrics: Speculations Concerning Our Responsibilities and Opportunities

Abstract

It is very gracious of those of you who are not here for the Society's business meeting to have come.

I am not happy about this address, for many of you have given serious thought to problems it merely touches upon. Yet, since the solutions we may have as individuals have not been generally discussed or applied, restatement, speculation, and discussion of old unfinished professional business may serve a useful purpose.

The activities of a profession according to Professor Whitehead should be "subjected to theoretical analysis and modified by theoretical conclusions derived from that analysis. This analysis has regard to the purposes of the avocation and to the adaptation of the activities for the attainment of those purposes. Such criticism must be founded upon some understanding of the nature of the things involved in those activities, so that the results of action can be foreseen. Thus, foresight based upon theory,
