This book is the result of intensive study of newborn and premature infants in health and disease over a 14-year period. Physiologic variations and diseases are well described, and the coverage is all-inclusive. Congenital malformations are broadly discussed, and examples are well illustrated.
The discussion of diseases such as tetanus and listeriosis in the newborn period, and interstitial plasma cell pneumonia in premature infants is particularly interesting for the pediatrician in this country, because these conditions either are not seen any more or have not yet been seen or recognized with any frequency.
As far as the treatment of various diseases is concerned, it appears to this reviewer that most pediatricians in this country would tend to be more conservative than the author. We would be inclined not to tape umbilical hernias or to treat hemangiomata, even if they are large, and we would not resect a short frenulum linguae.
