This book, written by four distinguished investigators in the field of virology, contains 26 chapters which deal with general considerations, such as immunity and natural history of virus diseases, as well as diagnosis and treatment. After these introductory chapters, specific viruses and the diseases which they produce are discussed. Moreover, certain clinical syndromes, such as gastroenteritis, virus meningitis, and acute respiratory disease are included, and, in summary fashion, all data relating to the multitude of viruses which may cause such illnesses are noted. The section on rickettsial diseases has been shortened in comparison to previous editions but still contains the critical information that is needed by the physician.

Advances in our understanding of viruses and their relationship to human illnesses have been extensive in recent years. The authors have shown commendable restraint in persenting only data of established authenticity with no attempt to be all-inclusive in dealing with information of
