Lawson Wilkins was putting the final touches on the third edition of his celebrated textbook when death overtook him in the autumn of 1963. His colleagues and successors, Drs. Robert Blizzard and Claude Migeon have performed an invaluable service by updating certain sections and carrying the final editorial tasks through to completion. Thus, this revision is not only the final monument to the man who founded the modern school of pediatric endocrinology, but also the most up-to-date textbook of endocrinology now available.

The format and subject headings of the third edition have not been changed substantially from the second edition, although there are 90 additional pages of text. The entire book has been thoroughly revised and in nearly every section are incorporated new data, new value judgements, and new formulations of previous thinking.
