Abstract

The management of the mentally retarded involves the active participation of a wide variety of professional disciplines. These include physicians of various specialties, educators, social service personnel, nurses, occupational trainers and therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, speech therapists, and others. To develop a comprehensive textbook that can be meaningful to so varied a professional group is a most difficult enterprise and explains the dearth of acceptable books of this kind. While the individual disciplines are reasonably well represented in specialized monographs, reviews, papers, and other contributions, these are most often weak in those aspects not directly related to their specialized field. However, because of the importance in management programs of an interdisciplinary approach to this problem, the necessity for a reasonably accurate and up-to-date orientation of all the involved program participants is self-evident.
