Abstract

CLINICAL HISTORY.—A 1-month-old infant was admitted to LeBonheur Children's Hospital for observation following an injury to the occipital region of the head. The baby had been dropped to the floor from an unknown height. Following the injury the baby took feedings well, did not vomit, and did not exhibit any signs of injury.

The infant was alert and in no distress. Symmetrical ridges traversing each parietal bone from the lambdoid to the coronal sutures were noted by the examiner. No hematoma or specific area of trauma was identified. The neurological findings were interpreted as normal. Radiographs of the skull were obtained (Fig 1 and 2).

Denouement and Discussion

INTRAPARIETAL SUTURES  The symmetrical appearance of radiolucent lines extending from each lambdoid to each coronal suture should arouse suspicion of an anomalous suture. Linear fractures are sharply demarcated, may be irregular or branched, and are not likely to by symmetrical.Caffey1
