Abstract

The author has undertaken in this book to assimilate the clinical and laboratory features of the infant cardiovascular system which define the normal and distinguish it from the abnormal.

After a discussion of the "concept of normal," the next two chapters are devoted to a review of the anatomic and physiologic features of fetal and infant circulation. Thereafter follow chapters on the evaluation of various parameters of the infant cardiovascular system such as heart murmurs, cyanosis, cardiac rate and rhythm, and heart size. The place of electrocardiography and radiography in evaluation of the infant's cardiac status is emphasized. Final chapters deal with special problems, including cardiac failure and the respiratory-distress syndrome, as well as the evaluation of the heart in primarily noncardiac diseases.
