To the Editor.—I appreciate Dr. Bachman's comments about the delay in diagnosis.
Dr. Bachman is no less distressed than I was at the delay in diagnosis. It was not the practice in the newborn nursery of the hospital where this child was born to attempt to visualize the urinary stream by the nursery staff. Had this been done, I suspect a diagnosis would have been made much sooner. Since that child's birth, a more conscious effort has been made on the part of the nursery staff and medical personnel associated with newborn care to evaluate the urinary stream prior to discharge.
