This is the fifth edition of this little volume. It was stated in the first edition of 1963 that, "this volume is offered as a modest attempt to bring to his desk (the pediatrician) some of this year's highlights in pediatrics." The present edition continues in the same role. No critical review is attempted. Doctor Gustafson is Director of the Department of Medical Literature for Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc, and Dr. Coursin is Director of Research in St. Joseph's Hospital, Lancaster, Pa. Clearly these authors have reviewed a great deal of literature in the preparation of the text and authorship is shared with four other contributors.
The first chapter is devoted to a discussion of computers in clinical medicine which the physician unfamiliar with the subject will find useful and informative. The second chapter deals with progress in pediatric cardiology and is well done, though references are cited dating back to 1955.
