The editors make no claim that the volume is a textbook of pediatric oncology, but indicate that it is written to describe the clinical and pathological manifestations of a variety of tumors in children and to discuss methods of treatment based on personal observations rather than "on an exhaustive review of the literature." The contributors' experience is derived mainly from the material and studies of the Manchester Children's Tumor Registry and includes a variety of rare as well as common tumors in childhood. Most of the chapters are stated to have resulted from collaboration between the Manchester contributors and after discussion with four distinguished physicians, three in the United Kingdom and one in the United States, concerning certain special facets of the subject matter.
