Abstract

The authors have collected in a single volume many conditions associated with mental retardation in children. Clinical features, pertinent laboratory data, pathogenetic mechanisms, and genetic patterns including heterozygote detection are presented briefly. Lengthy dissertations on individual entities with the use of chemical formulas, ultrastructural studies, or discussions of the molecular basis for the disease were purposely avoided. In sections of the book the authors are to be commended for presenting widely scattered data in a succinct manner; however, other areas are noticeably weakened by such deletions.

The contents can be divided into three basic sections: one dealing with errors in the metabolism of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates; another concerned with disorders of the endocrine glands, connective tissues, and chromosomes; and a miscellaneous group of disorders of many systems. Adequate references are arranged at the end of each chapter listed under each entity and are dated through 1967. The index is
