Illingworth, famous professor of child health at the University of Sheffield, in writing a book for general practitioners on symptoms as seen in pediatrics has produced a personal, almost intimate work of merit. Pediatricians will find many fascinating and sometimes stimulating comments on such common symptoms as headaches and abdominal pain. At the same time, one may be disappointed to find glaring omission in lists of causes of other symptoms. The author, however, explains he has not attempted to write an encylopedic tome. His discussions, occasionally repetitious but rarely dull, are prejudiced as to length and depth by his many years of experience. More than occasionally a patient is briefly described to illustrate a dictum that Illingworth considers especially important.
The references at the end of the discussion of most symptoms are distinctly personal selections from English and American literature, and vary in number from 27 on "Failure to Thrive"
