Abstract

We have developed a simple semi-quantitative method for the emergency estimation of plasma iron concentration. The test requires not more than ten minutes and permits identification of patients whose serum iron concentrations indicate serious iron poisoning. The method also permits prompt testing of gastric aspirates to confirm suspected iron ingestion. The reagents appear to be stable during prolonged periods.
