Abstract

It may be a temptation to ask what motivates one to write a book titled Patterns of Skin pH From Birth Through Adolescence. However when one remembers why men endanger their lives merely to climb high mountains, the question seems trite. Furthermore the authors may have simply been stimulated by their "fond remembrances of sojourns to rural New York, testing the pH on armpits of adolescents by appointment." Excluding altruistic considerations and bearing in mind the laws of supply-and-demand it is perplexing to determine the motivation of publishers who publish books on such topics. Perhaps they were misled by those who advised that this treatise "will be of interest to a variety of professions, notably physiologists, biologists, dermatologists and pediatricians." Perhaps this is an accurate evaluation, although it seems more likely to find its greatest readership among investigators in the soap and cosmetic industry.
