To the Editor.—Dr. Austrian places in proper perspective the potential (but as yet untested) role of active immunization in the prevention of aggressive pneumococcal disease in children with sickle cell anemia. We are indebted to Dr. Austrian for his persevering efforts in the development of programs for the evaluation of polyvalent vaccines in individuals with decreased splenic function.
