At first glance this book may appear to be just another symposium, a collection of reviews of new fields in cytogenetics. On closer inspection, however, it proves to be rather special, faithful to the goal of its title and worthy of its chief editor to whom it was dedicated, the late Stanley Wright. The authors, moderators, and editors with a brief backward look are scanning the horizon, emphasizing perspectives in genetics as well as cytogenetics—what we know, what we do not know, what we want to know, and how we could go about exploring the unknown. Obviously the book presupposes a knowledge and background in the field, is primarily directed toward those in research and not to the novice or the beginning student.
The book originated from a conference, the sixth of a series on Prevention of Mental Retardation, sponsored by NICHD, this one in Colorado Springs in 1970. Divided
