Abstract

There is a close relationship between distal phalangeal hypoplasia and a high incidence of arches in fingerprints and toeprints. A hypothesis is offered that the hypoplastic phalangeal skeleton was associated with underdevelopment of the digital pads at the time the dermal ridges were laid down.
