Diencephalic SyndromeLong-Term Survival

Am J Dis Child. 1973;125(1):123-125. doi:10.1001/archpedi.1973.04160010085021
Abstract

Survival for 12 years of a child with diencephalic syndrome is reported. The child at age 2 years had severe emaciation, pallor, nystagmus, and optic atrophy and was found to have a low-grade astrocytoma in the region of the anterior hypothalamus.

Following subtotal surgical removal and irradiation of the neoplasm, there was remission of emaciation, limited growth, documented growth hormone deficiency, and after 12 years, no evidence of tumor recurrence.
