Performance of child health associate students, medical students, and pediatric residents in representative basic science examinations designed for child health associate students was compared. In general, child health associate students received comparable or higher scores than the other two groups.
The three groups were also compared on a test of pediatric knowledge originally designed for medical students. Students in all three groups received passing grades on the examination; pediatric residents received the highest scores while the medical students performed slightly better than child health associates.
These findings demonstrate that child health associate students have relevant factual knowledge in the areas examined which approaches that of medical students and pediatric residents; the results confirm the effectiveness of the Child Health Associate Program curriculum in satisfactorily conveying pertinent information in basic sciences and clinical pediatrics.
