Under the guest editorship of Ray Helfer, MD, this edition of Advances in Pediatrics is largely devoted to those nonclinical topics that are currently in the forefront of interest in the field of ambulatory pediatrics. Defining just what the field of ambulatory pediatrics is has always raised conceptual problems, and the range and diversity of the "ambulatory pediatric" subjects covered in this volume attest to why this is so.
Although they deal mainly with issues of organization, content, management, record keeping, and research that are of particular interest to those who staff and direct ambulatory care programs, there is much here also for the individual practitioner. In fact, the excellent chapter on screening by Frankenburg, Ott's thorough review of new health professionals, and several other sections go well beyond pediatrics in interest and deserve dissemination to members of other disciplines who provide ambulatory care.
