This excellent book is highly recommended to pediatric hematologists and trainees. The editors indicate that the goal of their text is to provide the reader with a broad base of biomedical knowledge. This format results in the utilization of clinical disorders to illustrate various basic principles. For the most part, Drs Nathan and Oski have accomplished their objective in admirable fashion. There is no argument with their choice of contributors since the chapters are well written, scholarly, and well organized. The text tends to reflect the views of the Boston school of pediatric hematology, with more than one half of the authors either currently located in that city or Boston-trained. Four contributors are presently located outside of the United States.

Many of the chapters contain excellent background information on hematologic pathophysiology, biochemistry, kinetics, and morphology. There is very little overlap in the authors' coverage of the material. As with any
