This book is essentially the proceedings of two conferences on parenteral nutrition, held in October 1971 and May 1972 under the auspices of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

The book is therefore similar to a series of reports of conferences on this subject that were held between 1969 and 1972.1-6

Like these predecessors, Intravenous Nutrition in the High Risk Infant offers the reader the advantage of a multiplicity of viewpoints from some 30 contributors. However, by allowing three years to elapse between the conference and the publication date, the editors have virtually nullified the chief raison d'être for this type of publication, namely, speed of disseminating the latest scientific information.

Most of the contributors are established authorities in their respective fields by virtue of their previous contributions, some of which reappear in the present volume.
