To the Editor.—It is somewhat puzzling to read the recent article on congenital biliary atresia in the August issue of the Journal (130:830,1976) by Kobayashi and co-workers and many others like it in recent literature.
In the Western Journal of Surgery, Obstetrics, and Gynecology (58:714, 1950) there is an article entitled "Surgical Relief of External Biliary Tract Atresia" by McCarry and Pence. This was published 26 years ago and copies of the reprints were requested from the United States and many foreign countries. In Pediatric Clinics of North America, in a special volume entitled "Handicaps and Their Prevention" (August 1957), there is an article on total biliary duct atresia by Julian Sterberg in which credit is given to the original work of McCarry and Pence.
