The preface of this timely book on suicide attempts in children and youth stresses that suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people 15 to 24 years of age. There has been an alarming increase in suicides from 4:100,000 in 1957 to 13.6:100,000 in 1977. This volume, and the symposium on the epidemiology of suicide and suicide attempts in children sponsored by the Section of Community Pediatrics of the American Academy of Pediatrics in October 1978, from which this book was developed, are reflections that suicidal behavior among children and adolescents is being recognized increasingly as a pediatric problem.
