In the preface, Dr Wedgwood notes the continuing importance of infections in infancy and childhood and, hence, the need for a textbook on pediatric infectious diseases for those who provide primary care to children, as well as for the infectious disease specialist. In this book, the editors have succeeded in providing an up-to-date and useful text. Many of the contributors are well known in their field, a wide range of topics is covered, and both depth and scope of coverage are provided. Although this book has its deficiencies, including several topics that were omitted, most of the chapters are excellent and should make the book a valuable reference source for the health care provider.
The editors have organized the topics according to both organs (eg, chapters on gastrointestinal [GI] and liver infections) and specific microorganisms (eg, chapters on Salmonella, Shigella, GI viruses, and hepatitis), so that problems can be approached
