The author gives a systematic review of the pathologic changes occurring in the neonate as a result of interference with oxygenation of the developing brain. Since the pathogenetic mechanisms of these lesions are substantially unknown, they are grouped according to their gross and microscopic appearance into the hemorrhagic and parenchymal lesions as they occur in various subdivisions of the CNS. Such an approach may be viewed as an oversimplification; however, it offers the basic groundwork on which the eventual correlation with the clinical and physiologic findings must be established.
The material presented is up to date and deals with findings encountered daily in practice. This is in contrast with some of the general texts in pediatrics and pathology that still enumerate lesions that were seen in the past, but have since disappeared from the medical scene. Such descriptions are confusing to the clinicians and make them view pathology as irrelevant
