Abstract

In Reply.—Dr Amstey reminds me that Dr Nelson and I failed to include paromomycin among drugs available for treatment of giardiasis. While available in the United States, paromomycin is not approved for treatment of giardiasis in children. Dobon and associates1 reported successful eradication of Giardia in 21 of 58 children treated for either five or ten days using 30 mg/kg/day of paromomycin sulfate. Twenty-four percent of the children treated with lower doses relapsed. Approximately 15% of the 58 children treated with paromomycin suffered gastrointestinal intolerance to the drug. There seems to be little experience in the treatment of children with paromomycin in the United States. Additional studies should be carried out to assess its usefulness.
