Sir.—Two years ago AJDC published Dr Macdonald's article "Drugs, Drinking, and Adolescence."1 While delighted with that breakthrough article, this correspondent objected to the lack of emphasis on the familial aspects of chemical dependency, particularly the effects of parental alcoholism or other drug addictions on the emotional health of the children in the household.2 In his reply, Dr Macdonald3 not only agreed but suggested that AJDC commission a good review of the problems facing these children.

This August, AJDC has once again responded to a need, teaming Dr Macdonald with Dr Blume to publish the Editorial Review "Children of Alcoholics,"4 another first in the pediatric literature. The article dealt with a subject that, until now at least, has received little attention from the specialty group that should be supplying the medical leaders in this field. Perhaps this will stimulate some moves to correct this deficiency.
