Sir.—I am concerned about the recent article by Drs Patterson and Smith.1 I agree with these authors that in their study a large number of firearms were being kept by a large number of people in a very unsafe manner. I would like to know whether any attempt was made to determine how much training the people in question have had regarding the handling of firearms.
It would be interesting to know how many of these families had one or more members who belong to a local gun club. It would also be interesting to know whether any of these people belong to the National Rifle Association (NRA) and, if so, whether they had ever taken any of the courses in firearm safety given by that organization or its affiliates (in particular, Home Safety with Firearms and/or Hunter Safety courses).
