In Reply.—Dr Beegel expresses some of the concerns of individuals who use firearms for hobby or recreation, and he raises some interesting questions about our article.
Although the purpose of our article was not to evaluate possible benefits of firearm safety education, we did collect some data that may help to answer Dr Beegel's questions.
Fifty of the 57 individuals stating that they had a firearm in their home said they knew how to use the gun. Twenty-two percent (11/49) of these individuals said they had attended classes to learn how to use a gun. Only five of the 56 individuals who had a gun in their home were members of a gun club or rifle association. One person with a gun at home did not answer the questions about firearm classes or gun club membership.
It may be that those persons who have attended firearm classes exhibit behaviors
