Abstract

This brief monograph on pain management in children is one of a series of "Clinical Practice Guidelines" prepared by the Public Health Service. The volume was designed to assist health care practitioners in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of pain occurring in specific medical conditions. A companion volume on acute pain management in adults, including post operative pain and pain following medical procedures and trauma, is also offered. The monograph contains an introduction, an abbreviated pain-management flowchart, principles of pain assessment and reassessment, management of pain related to procedures, management of postoperative pain, and special considerations for management of pain in neonates and infants. The book is reader-friendly, with appropriate accompanying tables on pain interviews and dosages of medication. One section
